A Novel Magnetic Hardening Mechanism for Nd?Fe?B Permanent Magnets Based on Solid?State Phase Transformation

Permanent magnets based on neodymium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) alloys provide the highest performance and energy density, finding usage in many high-tech applications. Their magnetic relies intrinsic properties of hard-magnetic Nd2Fe14B phase combined with control over microstructure during production. In this study, a novel hardening mechanism is described such materials solid-state transformation. Using modified Nd-Fe-B type Nd16Febal-x-y-zCoxMoyCuzB7 for first time it revealed how microstructural transformation from metastable Nd2Fe17Bx to can be thermally controlled, leading an astonishing increase coercivity ?200 kAm?1 almost 700 kAm?1. Furthermore, after treating quenched sample Nd16Fe56Co20Mo2Cu2B7, presence Mo leads formation fine FeMo2B2 precipitates, range micrometers down few nanometers. These precipitates are responsible refinement grains so high coercivity. This incorporated into existing manufacturing processes prove applicable fabrication routes magnets, as additive manufacturing.
